As a sports administrator in Nepal working across federation governance, athlete development, and high-altitude event direction, I recently completed the Physical Education Foundation of India’s (PEFI) five-day certificate course, Making Champions: Scientific Training, Talent Development & Performance Optimization (15–19 July 2026). Why a Sports Administrator in Nepal Needs Scientific Training Systems
Most talent identification in South Asian grassroots sport still relies on subjective observation — a coach’s eye at a district tournament. Part of my job as a sports administrator in Nepal is replacing that with testable, repeatable systems. The PEFI course formalized what a proper talent ID battery looks like:
- Anthropometric screening — height, limb length ratios, somatotype, projected growth curves for youth athletes
- Physiological testing — VO2 max estimation (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test, Beep Test), lactate threshold proxies, anaerobic power (Wingate-style testing where equipment allows)
- Motor competency batteries — reaction time, agility (T-test, 505 test), coordination under fatigue
- Psychological screening — grit and coachability indices, which the course argued are as predictive of long-term success as physiological markers
For a organization like ANSF, the practical shift is moving from single-day trials to longitudinal testing — repeating a reduced battery quarterly so we’re tracking development curves, not one-off performances. This matters most in remote regions like Mugu and Karnali, where an athlete’s baseline may look unimpressive against urban peers simply due to training-access disparity, not ceiling potential.
Periodization: Macrocycles, Mesocycles, and the Case Against Generic Training Blocks
The course’s periodization module reinforced a principle that’s frequently ignored in Nepali coaching: training should be structured in nested cycles, not repeated weekly templates.
- Macrocycle — the full season or competition-year arc (e.g., an athlete building toward a specific ultramarathon date)
- Mesocycle — 3–6 week blocks targeting a specific adaptation (aerobic base, lactate threshold, race-specific power)
- Microcycle — the weekly structure, sequenced to manage fatigue accumulation (typically a 3:1 or 2:1 load-to-deload ratio)
For endurance and trail-running athletes — the population most relevant to events like Chhayanath Trail Ultra — periodization has to account for altitude as an additional training variable, not just volume and intensity. That means structuring mesocycles around altitude acclimatization windows (typically 10–14 days for meaningful hematological adaptation) ahead of a high-altitude race date, rather than treating altitude exposure as incidental.
Load Management: ACWR and Injury-Risk Thresholds
One of the most directly applicable tools from the course was the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR) — comparing an athlete’s short-term training load (a 7-day rolling average) against their long-term load (a 28-day rolling average). Sports-science research (see the British Journal of Sports Medicine’s workload guidelines) generally places the “sweet spot” between 0.8–1.3, with ratios above roughly 1.5 associated with sharply elevated injury risk.
For federation-level programs without GPS vests or proprietary load-tracking software, the course covered session-RPE load calculation (Borg CR-10 scale × session duration in minutes) as a low-cost proxy any coach with a notebook can implement. This is the model I’m recommending ANSF-affiliated coaches adopt at district level — no equipment budget required, only consistent logging discipline.
Performance Optimization at Altitude: A Safety Framework, Not Just a Speed Framework
Running the first edition of the Chhayanath Trail Ultra — a 33.35km ITRA-affiliated race summiting at 4,820m in Mugu — gave me a live case study for the course’s performance-optimization module. At altitude, “performance optimization” and “athlete safety” are the same discipline, not two separate ones:
- Hypoxia-driven pacing errors — athletes underestimating early-race effort due to blunted perceived exertion at altitude, leading to late-race decompensation
- Course-level risk stratification — pre-identifying medical checkpoints based on elevation-gain segments, not just distance markers
- Recovery monitoring post-event — altitude events carry elevated risk of delayed-onset symptoms (AMS-adjacent fatigue, dehydration masking), changing what race-day medical protocol needs to cover compared to sea-level events
Chhayanath’s first edition ran with a 100% safety rate across 58 elite athletes and produced two course records — an outcome that reflects deliberate protocol design, not luck, and one I now have a stronger technical vocabulary to formalize and replicate.
What This Means for a Sports Administrator Working in Nepal
Certifications like this matter less as personal credentials and more as institutional capacity inputs. As Executive Director of the All Nepal Sports Foundation, my priority as a sports administrator in Nepal is translating frameworks like these into standard operating procedures that regional federations, volunteer coaches, and event organizers can actually implement without lab-grade sports-science infrastructure. Over the next quarter, ANSF will be:
- Piloting quarterly testing batteries (not single-day trials) at two district-level talent ID camps
- Introducing session-RPE load logging as a standard requirement for ANSF-affiliated youth coaches
- Formalizing an altitude-event medical protocol template, using Chhayanath Trail Ultra’s first-edition data as the baseline case study
